Two Korean Military Talks Begin First since the incident Yeonpyeong

Talks between the North Korean army colonel and South Korea held at Panmunjom on Tuesday. The meeting was a similar event the first since North Korea bombard Yeonpyeong island in South Korea last November. South Korean officials said the two sides have agreed to hold further talks on Wednesday.

Defense officials in Seoul said the first day of talks early in the building known as the "House of Peace", in the demilitarized zone that lasted more than nine hours, including several times to rest.

A South Korean military spokesman said the two sides tried to minimize the differences in agenda and procedural matters to reach agreement on the organization of talks between officials higher.

Professor Kim Young-hyun of the department of North Korean studies at the University of Dungguk said the two sides seem to find it difficult to bridge that gap.

However, Kim predicted Wednesday it will reach an agreement on higher-level talks. According to him, Pyongyang and Seoul under pressure from their respective allies, namely China and the United States, to engage in greater dialogue.

Media reports in South Korea declared North Korea did not apologize for the onslaught of last November, as demanded by South Korea. North Korea also does not claim responsibility for the sinking of the South Korean warships in the Yellow Sea last ten months. In contrast, North Korean officials insist that the broader discussion was held in high level talks to defuse military tensions.

South Korean officials said the apology for the provocation that resulted in death last year is a prerequisite to hold a discussion by senior officials.

There are reports that North Korea, through its mission at the United Nations in New York, has submitted the request. U.S. aid suspended in 2009 amid concerns about nuclear tests and North Korean missiles.
